Placing These Two Points Wrong Will Wreck Your Drawing ⚠️

Ever looked at a drawing and felt like something's off, but couldn't quite explain why?

Most of the time, the culprit is where you placed your vanishing points.

Today I'll give you one number for distortion-free 2-point perspective.

📌 The Absolute Formula: Vanishing Point Spacing = 3x the Box Width

  • If your two vanishing points sit too close together inside the canvas, you get a box where the vertical edges are fine but the front face is squashed — a shape that couldn't actually exist

  • Keep the spacing between vanishing points at 3x the box width, and you get a stable form

  • ❌ Spacing = 2x box width → your field of view stretches too wide (distorts like a wide-angle lens)

  • ⭕ Spacing = 3x box width → matches the ~60° field of view we find comfortable

Same drawing, but the left version looks noticeably more awkward — that's the spacing difference at work.

🎨 Drawing Order

1. Draw the center edge first (your reference line)

2. Draw both side edges

3. Measure the distance from the center edge to one side edge, multiply by 3, and mark your vanishing points there on both sides (off-canvas is fine)

4. Connect each vanishing point to the center edge, then fit the side edges to those lines
